SUMTER, SC – According to WIS, officials have provided additional details concerning the police chase that turned deadly on US 521 near Mulberry Church Rd on Friday.
Earlier that day, authorities were dispatched to the Red Lobster on Broad St concerning a report of a fight between multiple men with guns.
Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Sumter police officers performed a traffic stop on a Cadillac CTS driven by a 17-year-old male believed to be involved in the incident when a passenger exited the vehicle and fled the scene.
The teen driver then fled and led authorities on a chase at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The teen struck an embankment, causing the Cadillac to overturn and catch on fire. This happened around 5 p.m.
Rescue crews transported the teen to an area hospital, where he died on Sunday.
The incident is under investigation by the Sumter County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
