LUGOFF, SC – According to WIS, a teen died when he crashed into a tree following a police pursuit near US 1 and Richardson Blvd Sunday.
The pursuit began when a Kershaw County sheriff’s deputy approached a car parked at a closed Dollar General on Hwy1. The driver, a 17-year-old girl, sped off and the deputy got in his patrol vehicle and followed.
The teen made a left turn onto Richardson Blvd and slammed into a tree at high speed.
Rescue crews pronounced the 17-year-old dead at the scene of the accident.
The incident is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
It is unclear why the teen led the deputy on a pursuit.
